MINING AND BUSINESS: Hello Sir. Could you introduce yourself in a few words and tell us what your responsibilities are within the company?
JD TAKIS: My name is Jean-Dominique Takis. I sit on the Board of Directors of Gécamines and I am a member of the Strategy
Committee. My essential commitment is to help think about the vision of the great Gécamines that we all want for tomorrow.
M&B: We are at the Panda site with a new heap, what will it change in the production of Gécamines?
JDT: We are indeed on the site called the Grand Hepa de Panda.
As you can see in these basins, we are doing heap leaching here and this is a very important project in the context of relaunching Gécamines’ production.
The potential of this site is a monthly increase from 1,500 to 2,500 tonnes of copper produced at Shituru. So that’s a very significant increase. The project has been completed. What you see is the state of the storage of the minerals on the heap they are carrying out, they are already at 4 meters high.
M&B: What does this mean for the production of Gécamines in thousands of tonnes per year?
JDT: The objective we have been pursuing for a few years now is to exceed what has already been done for more than two decades, productions that unfortunately are below 20,000 tonnes of copper. If you take the low assumption of 1,500 tonnes per month, you already have 18,000 tonnes of increments in production. So the objective is to reach 30,000 tonnes in 2019 and of course to reach 40,000 tonnes in 2020. This production would put Gécamines back on the copper producers’ scene.
