OVERVIEW ON AFRICAN UTILITY WEEK AND  POWERGEN AFRICA
Thousands of power and water professionals attended the recent, award-winning conference and exhibition African Utility Week and POWERGEN Africa in Cape Town from 14-16 May.

The programme was extensively researched with utilities and municipalities across Africa and provided practical experience, knowledge, panel discussions and keynote addresses to the industry on topics including finance and investment, thermal generation, renewables, transmission & distribution, smart tech, revenue cycle management and metering as well as water.

The free exhibition’s Knowledge Hub also featured dozens of practical workshops and demonstrations. 

International pavilions at the African Utility Week and POWERGEN Africa were from the USA, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India and Poland and showcased specialised technology and services for the utility, metering, renewable and water industries. Already a very satisfied Brazilian delegation has reported that its participation at the event is expected to generate more than $ 5 million in business. 

Ethiopia’s former State Minister in the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy, Mr Wondimu Tekle Sigo, Ghana Grid Co, Lilongwe Water Board and several renewable energy generation projects on the continent were amongst the winners at the sixth edition of the prestigious African Power, Energy & Water Industry Awards gala dinner that forms part of the event, honouring the leading utilities, projects and people in the energy and water industries on the continent.

Other side events at this year’s African Utility Week and POWERGEN Africa were the Utility CEO Forum, closed door boardroom meetings, by invitation only , attended by 34 utility executives and CEOs from across the continent ; Coca-Cola Africa’s Community Water Roundtable to gather critical inputs and insights from leaders in the water sector ; and the Initiate! Impact Challenge for students and start-ups which was won by a team from Strathmore University in Nairobi.
