It is a secular organization open to all people regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, or political preference. There are 34,282 member clubs worldwide. 1.2 million individuals called Rotarians have joined these clubs. In Lubumbashi, the Rotary Club Lubumbashi Etoile was created in 1985 and has about 25 members. Its strategic axes are the promotion of peace, the prevention and treatment of diseases, providing clean water and health care for mothers and children, supporting education and contributing to the growth of local economies.
Rotarians are united by the motto " Service Above Self " and the following Four-Way Test governs their professional lives, family and friendly relations:
- Is it the truth?
- Is it fair to all concerned?
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Fundraising is done through our annual Charter's nights and other events. The funds raised, together with the support of the Rotary International Foundation, district and other clubs allow Rotarians to carry out large-scale projects. In 2015 and 2016, the Rotary Club Lubumbashi Etoile distributed 15,000 books to teach reading to of schools in Lubumbashi, Likasi, Kolwezi and surroundings. They donated new generation equipment and tools for the metal and wood workshops at the Cité des Jeunes and wheelchairs to the university clinics, the Butterfly Centre and the Wote Pamoja Center for the Disabled as well as small accessories at Nuru center for the blind and visually impaired. The club also awarded scholarships to students at Mikembo primary school.
